Tube and pipe – the differences explained

While some people use the terminology tube and pipe to mean the same thing, in engineering there is a distinct difference between the two terms.

With tube the sizing is based on the exact outside diameter, it is typically referred to where the structural application is more important than the carrying capacity.

Pipe is generally used to transport gases or fluids where consistency of the inside diameter is the most critical measurement, for the accuracy of carrying capacity calculations. The size of the pipe is based on the inside diameter and wall thickness.

At Corrotherm we supply both seamless tube and seamless pipe in a variety of nickel alloys, titanium alloys, duplex and super duplex materials.

The benefits of nickel alloys

Nickel alloys play an incredibly important role in manufacturing and engineering, due to their corrosion resistance in both aqueous and extreme temperature applications.

In addition to high melting points, resistance to oxidation and corrosion, they are very ductile, and easily welded.

It is these properties that make nickel alloy tube the popular choice in a variety of industries that demand resistance to corrosion or increased stress from temperature extremes. To ensure these properties are met, exacting production standards are required. That is why Corrotherm has invested years in developing long term relationships with the world’s leading manufacturers of nickel alloy tube, to ensure we supply you with the highest quality products at the right price.

Our nickel alloy tube range is suitable for a wide range of applications

Nickel alloys are used across a wide range of industries. They are commonly used in oil and gas extraction where their properties help to overcome the challenges of corrosion, pressure and temperature. Nickel alloys also make excellent heat exchangers in the chemical processing and nuclear industries. They’re used in steam generator tubing in the nuclear power industry and in high-temperature aircraft systems. Their corrosion resistance makes them invaluable in desalination equipment.
