Phill Addision, Corrotherm

With his in-depth knowledge of both the industry and special metals, Phill Addison is a real asset to Corrotherm, so we took the chance to get to know him a little better.

Name: Phill Addison
Position: Business Development Manager
Time at Corrotherm: 6 years
Interests and hobbies: Visiting Wales, cycling, decorating

Phill has been working with Corrotherm for well over 25 years, at first through his long-term position at Special Metals before officially joining the company six years ago. He started his career in 1971 at Henry Wiggin & Company Hereford, which later became Inco Alloys, Special Metals and, ultimately, Special Metals Wiggins.

Given his specialist knowledge and in-depth experience of the industry and its challenges, it’s no wonder that we were keen to have him on board. As our business development manager, Phill is the man who builds our customer relationships and manages our supplies – making him thoroughly essential to daily operations.

Luckily, Phill enjoys working for Corrotherm as much as we like having him, citing daily variety as the reason he thrives in the role: “One day I can be working on the computer; the next day in a mill in jeans and a T-shirt up to my neck in Inconel 625 seamless pipe; and then next day suited and booted on a trade stand at an exhibition.” As long as there's a plentiful supply of tea to hand, Phill's a happy man.

Having seen Corrotherm from the outside, Phill knew what to expect when he became a part of the team. “Before joining Corrotherm, I was always impressed with the way the team combined a high level of professionalism with a sense of fun,” he says. “That still prevails, and I’m continually impressed with true teamwork – and I’m proud to be part of it.”

Despite his years in the industry, evolving technologies and applications still manage to throw some surprises Phill's way. "I've dealt with most wrought forms of nickel alloys but always found tubulars to be interesting from a manufacturing and in part, a technical aspect. We deal with a wide range of alloys that in turn are applied to a wide range of applications including oil, gas, petrochemical, thermal processing, lots more - and occasionally some surprising ones."

He knows inside out the industry in which Corrotherm operates. He is therefore more than aware of the issues that affect companies in the current environment: “There's no doubt the downturn is primarily due to low oil prices having a impact on investment to explore, extract and process. Couple that with decreased demand for petroleum ‘product’ and over-supply in the market, and it must be said that the short-term prospects are not overly positive. However, something will happen to change this eventually, so in the meantime it's about keeping a close eye on industry developments with the aim of spotting new trends, technologies and opportunities – and being prepared for the eventual upturn when it comes.”

In his role, Phill is perfectly placed to help drive that preparation for the future. Like his colleague in sales, Shan Sadanandan, for now, he works hard to help our customers find the right materials for the right jobs: “With the combined knowledge and experience of my colleagues in Corrotherm, we can address, help and guide clients to the right material choices for their applications. The experience then kicks in to source and supply, with the aim of complete customer satisfaction.”

Away from the office, Phill also makes the most of his leisure time. He has a caravan in South Wales, close to the beautiful Gower peninsula, and that is where he can be found most Saturday mornings during the summer season. “We might take the bikes out and ride along the Swansea Bay cycle track and, if pressed by the current Mrs A, doing a bit of shopping. Now that the season's finished, for the next couple of Saturdays, I'll be at my son’s flat helping with decoration. No prizes to guess my preference!”
