Corrotherm ISO 14001 certification
Green initiatives and environmental news stories seem to be shooting up throughout the media on a daily basis. With the eyes of the world focussing on these issues, manufacturing and production-based industries are coming under pressure to demonstrate awareness of the impact that we are, collectively, having on the environment - and at Corrotherm we take this responsibility very seriously indeed.

Back in 2012, the directors at Corrotherm International decided it was time to get certified for ISO 14001 and show that we as a company are committed to reducing our impact on the environment. With so many of our clients operating in highly-regulated environments, it seemed to make the most practical business sense for us to gain three ISO certifications for health and safety, environmental and quality management systems – not an easy feat, as you can appreciate.

So with a determination to undertake the ISO 9001 (quality), 14001 (environmental) and 18001 (health and safety) certifications at the same time, we approached management consultancy Blackmores to help us to deliver the transformational change at Corrotherm International that we were seeking.

Corrotherm chose to work with Blackmores due to its excellent reputation for delivering bespoke management systems tailored to a business' unique requirements. With that in mind, the Blackmores team agreed with great enthusiasm that it would be far more straightforward to implement all three ISO certifications at the same time, as they would be able to build a much more efficient Integrated Management System (IMS). So we decided to go for the hat-trick!

It is true to say that Blackmores don’t do anything by halves and certainly doesn’t agree with the ‘Here’s the manual… off you go!’ approach. The consultancy  worked with us closely at every step of the way to make sure that a robust system was implemented and that all staff were trained to use it correctly.

Rachel Churchman, QHSE consultant at Blackmores, explains: “The ISO standards have been updated over time; indeed, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 are due to be revised later in 2015. In recent years the focus has shifted towards efficient, effective processes, rather than the completion of endless streams of paperwork and forms that blighted the early days of Quality Management – the management systems have to reflect reality while remaining  workable in today’s busy work environment.”

As any company that has applied for ISO certification would be able to tell you, you need to be re-certified every three years to ensure that you continue to adhere to high standards, so Corrotherm’s IMS is built with this continual improvement cycle of audits, inspections and updates in mind.

Ian Newman, managing director at Corrotherm, said: “ISO 14001 enables Corrotherm to demonstrate that we take environmental management seriously. We have recently undertaken our three year re-certification audit for all three ISO standards, which we passed with flying colours. This is testament to a highly robust IMS, and we are continuing to improve this with Blackmores' support.

“As a result of our certification, we are able to tender for a lot of new business opportunities, where ISO 14001 certification is a mandatory requirement, and we know that we are doing the right thing towards the environment.”
