INCONEL® alloy 625 is a solid solution alloy of nickel, chromium and molybdenum alloy with an addition of niobium, which in combination with molybdenum distorts the alloys atomic matrix and provides high strength in the annealed condition without a deliberate strengthening heat treatment. Normally supplied in the annealed condition for maximum stability during fabrication and subsequent service, the alloy has found to have a resistance to potable and brackish or salt water, where pitting and crevice corrosion become prevalent due to Chloride ions. As a result sour gas gathering pipelines have been constructed with solid, or clad, INCONEL® alloy 625 and used in seawater heat exchangers in power plants, also in refineries, as well as offshore topside services that frequently require this material.
