After a brilliant 2015 for Corrotherm International’s Jan Ward in which she was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) and awarded an honorary doctorate in engineering, our very own CEO was nominated for Non-Executive Director of the Year at the 2016 Grant Thornton Quoted Company Awards.

The event, which recognises the achievements of quoted companies outside the FTSE 350 and their directors, took place at the Natural History Museum in London on Wednesday. It’s not every day you attend a black-tie dinner in the company of a 20 metre long dinosaur!

The awards celebrate the huge contribution that the small-cap community makes to the UK economy and acknowledge the best PLCs, executive and non-executive board directors, fund managers and advisers. Shortlists are determined through a survey of chief executives of these listed companies.

No stranger to awards ceremonies, having won the NatWest Everywoman award and IOD Global Director of the Year, Jan’s story is an inspiring one.

After starting her working life at a local shop and after a brief spell at Readers Digest, Jan seized the opportunity to undertake the Institute of Export course. The course served as a springboard to a trainee role with a supplier and distributor of special metals and it was there that her love of engineering was formed.

As her career progressed, Jan started export businesses for a number of other special metal providers, gaining valuable international experience of the industry. Then, having achieved success for others, Jan decided to have a go for herself and in 1992 Corrotherm was formed.

Jan’s international experience has served her well at Corrotherm and helped build the brand in overseas markets.

Now an international organisation with offices in the Middle East, China, Australia, Korea, India and South Africa, Corrotherm has certainly come a long way since its origins in Jan’s front room all those years ago! Her passion, expertise and refusal to listen to those who say it’s not possible have seen the company go from strength to strength during this time and we’re delighted that these qualities were recognised by the industry peers who nominated her for the award.

The Non-Executive Director of the Year title is awarded to non-execs who have been a catalyst for deals, contracts and acquisitions and engendered good corporate governance at their companies. Share price, profit and sales growth are also taken into account when deciding who is awarded the title.

Unfortunately for us, Jan just missed out on the top spot to John Davies of the support services group Redde plc and we at Corrotherm would like to congratulate him on a well-deserved win.

Other awards presented at the event included Entrepreneur of the Year, Deal of the Year and Chairman of the Year.

Congratulations to all the nominees and winners!
