Being environmentally conscious and showing awareness of the impact of our industry's activities is key for any business. Here at Corrotherm International, we are always looking for fresh ideas to help us to meet our social responsibilities, and our new Sustrans transport policy is our latest 'green' initiative.

Travelling to and from work each day is essential for all of us, but the daily commute can not only be a stressful slog against the traffic, it's also not good for safeguarding the environment, as it inevitably leads to an increase in the volume of cars on the road.

At Corrotherm we take our environmental responsibilities seriously, so the transport issue is one that we are addressing with our proposed Sustrans policy, which we are developing with a view to helping our employees to use more eco-friendly methods of transport on their commute.

The idea of a travel action plan is to reduce the number of people using their car to commute on their own to work, and instead encouraging them to explore more sustainable solutions, such as walking, cycling, using public transport or car sharing.

Our new transport policy is just the latest initiative to help lessen the impact of our operations on the environment. In the summer of 2015, we undertook the ISO 14001 certification to demonstrate our commitment to environmental management, meeting the high standards required to pass with flying colours. Part of this continued certification means taking measures to reduce our total CO2 emissions, which is one of the key aims of our new travel action plan.

The new policy proposes making sure that all employees are aware of practical, sustainable transport options, such as public transport operating in the local area, and promoting the health benefits of walking and cycling. Using sustainable transport can also have a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of staff, which is something that is very important to us here at Corrotherm. In particular, making use of ‘active travel’ can increase fitness levels, reduce the number of sick days taken and makes people happier – which will certainly be of benefit all round!

As well as informing staff about available options and encouraging them to make better travel decisions, we will also be providing information to future visitors to the Corrotherm site on the best ways to reach us, highlighting sustainable transport solutions. This is key, as it has been shown that the way that people arrive at a location for the first time is often how they will continue to arrive for future visits.

Throughout 2016 we will start to implement a number of changes at Corrotherm to help meet our travel action plan objectives. We're also looking into getting involved in the Southampton Travel Planners' Forum, which will help us to stay abreast of the best methods for improving business travel. So don't be surprised, if you come to visit us in Southampton in the coming months, if we provide you with some alternative transport options to help you plan your journey.
